Monthly bankruptcy filings by consumers fell.
Bankruptcy was filed by 88,663 consumers during September, the American Bankruptcy Institute reported today.
Filings fell from 96,413 in August but were 29 percent worse than September 2007.
So far this year, 773,810 bankruptcies have been filed.
Chapter 13 fillings accounted for 34 percent of last month's activity, according to the institute, which bases its report on data from the National Bankruptcy Research Center.
The American Bankruptcy Institute -- which reports a membership of 11,700 attorneys, accountants, bankers, judges, professors, lenders, turnaround specialists and other bankruptcy professionals -- projects 1.1 million bankruptcy cases will be filed this year.
