Consumer bankruptcy filings fell more than 15 percent last month.
November consumer bankruptcies were 112,152, the American Bankruptcy Institute reported today. Filings tumbled 18 percent from the record 135,913 in the previous month.
ABI said its figures were based on data from the National Bankruptcy Research Center.
ABI’s more than 12,400 members include bankers, judges and other bankruptcy professionals as well as lenders.
In November 2008, 99,925 consumer bankruptcies were filed.
So far this year, 1,294,514 consumer filings have occurred. By Dec. 31, ABI expects the figure to exceed 1.4 million.
Included in last month’s activity were around 32,500 chapter 13 filings, falling from around 38,700 filings in October. Chapter 13 activity represented 29 percent of November filings.
