Nationwide Lending holds auction for benefit of employees, others

January 5, 2005

Employees of two California mortgage companies have harnessed the holiday spirit to provide support for Americans in need here and abroad. The beneficiaries even included fellow employees.

Helping others all year round has become second nature to the people working at Nationwide Lending. So it wasn't news when it was announced again this holiday season money would be raised for those who were in need, including U. S. troops abroad in Iraq.

After learning that Orange County, where both his home and office are located, ranked last in giving even though it was the fourth wealthiest county in the country, Nationwide executive Tim Burke said he was inspired to reach above and beyond the company's traditional charitable donations this year.

The company reportedly raised $8,500 this year for those who have found themselves in unfortunate situations this holiday season.

"I challenged our people to give more this season," Burke explained. "And I hope my message will inspire others in the industry."

Irvine, Calif.-based Nationwide was founded eight years ago and is operated by Burke, business partners Eric Morgenson and Ted Matosich, and its 130 employees. Burke said Nationwide does about 90% of its lending online with affiliates such as Lendingtree.com and Lowermybills.com.

Burke said the company held a silent auction to raise funds and have used the proceeds to help its own employees who were in need as well as strangers who have been down on their luck with no where to turn. "We heard through our Las Vegas office that a mother and her three children were about to get evicted from their one bedroom home," Burke said. "We were able to give her a chunk of the money to allow her to get out of her situation and we are helping her get a better job, too."

"We have a great bunch of people here," Burke commented. "And it's not just at Christmas time, we are this way all year round."

"Some people make an unconscionable amount of money in this business," he said. "We all need to desire to give back."

Summing up a "thank-you" email to the employees of Nationwide Burke wrote, "greatness in life isn't measured in finances; it's measured in the number of people you touch as you give yourself and what you have learned in some way to help others less fortunate than you."

Another Orange County mortgage company made dreams come true this Christmas for 45 families. Over $6500 worth of toys, clothes, electronics, and grocery gift certificates were given away through the Child Guidance Center in Santa Ana to families that otherwise wouldn't have had gifts this holiday season, according to a recent press release from the the donor -- Secured Funding Corp.

Hank Paris, Executive Director at the Center, was quoted as saying in the announcement that many of the parents, including single mothers, cried when they picked up their gifts. "They couldn't believe the generosity of the community," Paris said. "Thanks to the amazing generosity of Secured Funding, this has been our best year yet."

Founded in 1993, Costa Mesa-based Secured Funding Corp. says it is a full service mortgage banker that specializes in second lien business, offering a variety of mortgage products from A-paper to subprime home equity loans. Secured has over 500 employees and operates in 33 states.
