Mortgage Lending Goes on the Road

Recent mortgage-related conferences

Mortgage fraud, mortgage compliance and reverse mortgage lending are among topics being addressed at mortgage conferences. Mortgage licenses, mortgage leads and mortgage legislation are the areas of focus at several other events. Much of the latest activity is happening in the nation's capitol.

From May 13 to May 15, the Fourth Annual Fraud and Forensic Accounting Education Conference will be held in Atlanta, a February news release indicated. The convention is being sponsored by the accounting firm of Porter Keadle Moore and Georgia Southern University in conjunction with the Center for Forensic Studies in Accounting and Business.

FBI Special Agent Robert Herndon will keynote the conference. Herndon was a key investigator in the case that inspired the book and recent film The Informant.

Georgia Assistant Attorney General Greg Lohmeier will speak at the Georgia Real Estate Fraud and Prevention and Awareness Coalition's Quarterly Educational Meeting. The complimentary session is being held at the Atlanta Junior League Headquarters on April 14. Lohmeier will discuss the challenges he faced prosecuting Gilford vs. State, a mortgage fraud case.

The Mortgage Bankers Association issued a bulletin indicating that the hotel discount cutoff for its National Policy Conference 2010 ends on March 11. In addition, Michael S. Barr, assistant secretary for financial institutions at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, has been added as a new second-session speaker. The event is being held on April 13 and 14 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency recently said that its Community Bank Directors Workshop in St. Louis on March 23 will provide information that expands bank directors' skills and understanding of issues facing their banks. The $65 workshop includes pre-course reading and course materials, an OCC telephone seminar CD, a community bank supervision handbook and two meals.

From March 21 to March 23, the American Bankers Association is hosting its Real Estate Lending Conference in Weston, Fla., a February statement said. More than 20 sessions will supplemented by case studies, checklists and networking activities. The cost is $1,090 for ABA members and $1,585 for nonmembers.

Among ABA's planned sessions are TILA and Fair Lending Changes: Managing Your Business to Minimize Compliance Risk; Interpreting Today's Appraisal Reality; and RESPA and Consumer Protections: New Burdens, New Benefits.

Mortgage Pricing Systems announced today that it will host booth number 228 at the 27th Regional Conference of Mortgage Bankers. That event is being held from March 14 to March 19 at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, Atlantic City, N.J. As part of the fanfare, the Montville, N.J.-based company reported the release of a custom rate sheet feature.

The 2010 National Interagency Community Reinvestment Conference will be held in New Orleans from March 14 to March 18, a recent statement said. The biennial conference is being hosted by the federal bank and thrift regulatory agencies and the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund.

EquiCap LLC Managing Director of Mortgage Daniel Hilpert planned to participate in's Distressed Investing Leaders Forum 2010 yesterday in New York, a March 8 statement said.

Among the presenters at the 35th Annual Association of Insurance and Financial Analysts Conference earlier this month in Naples, Florida, was Genworth Financial Inc. U.S. Mortgage Insurance President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Schneider.

William Mills Agency CEO William Mills III was among speakers at the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association Roadshow last month in Atlanta. He spoke on a panel about wisely budgeting marketing and advertising dollars.

At its 2010 NAMB Legislative & Regulatory Conference last month in Washington, D.C., the National Association of Mortgage Brokers developed its 2010 policy agenda. Topics addressed at the event included originator compensation, Federal Housing Administration lending and the Home Valuation Code of Conduct. FHA Commissioner David Stevens was among the scheduled speakers.

LeadPoint CEO Marc Diana and another LeadPoint executive were among the speakers at the LeadsCon conference in Las Vegas on Feb. 23 and 24. Diana spoke about the impact of Google comparison ads.

The second annual Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System User Conference held in San Diego from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11 was a success, according to attendees from Patton Boggs LLP. The attorneys noted that nearly 300 people came to the event.

More than 4,000 people attended the Credit Union National Association's Governmental Affairs Conference last month in Washington, D.C., the National Credit Union Administration announced. Among speakers at the conference were NCUA board members Michael E. Fryzel and Ms. Hyland.
