Mortgage Conferences Tackle Micro, Macro Issues

Upcoming mortgage-related conferences and events

Nearly 20 conferences and other events, some of them overlapping, are filling up the fall calendar. Some are focusing on specific problems or challenges, while others present overviews of today's mortgage market. Litigation, regulation and distressed servicing are among topics being covered.

In September alone, the Mortgage Bankers Association is sponsoring three events, while its wholly-owned subsidiary, the Mortgage Industry Standards Maintenance Organization, is holding its five-day trimester meeting.

The MBA's Risk Management and Quality Assurance Forum 2012, being held Sept. 9 to Sept. 11 at the Omni Dallas Hotel in Dallas, will address such timely issues as the attorneys general servicer settlement, rating agency credit criteria, mitigating repurchase risk, HARP and other refinance programs and servicing quality control.

The MBA's Compensation Roundtable, which is open to persons with companies that participated in the Mortgage Banking Compensation Survey Program, will be held Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Topics include economic and mortgage market outlooks, Washington updates on regulatory reforms, Dodd-Frank impacts and discussion of the results of the compensation survey.

The MBA's Regulatory Compliance Conference 2012 will be held from Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 at the Grand Hyatt Washington in the nation's Capital. Sessions will cover the latest on Dodd-Frank, RESPA, TILA, HOEPA, HMDA, Dodd-Frank, SAFE, the National Mortgage Licensing System and Registry, appraisals and other issues.

MISMO's Trimester Meeting and Educational Summit and Workshop will be held from Sept. 17 until Sept. 21 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. Sessions will include the development of MISMO standards, technology's role and servicing, property valuation and other issues.

Other September events include The Five Star Conference and Expo being held from Sept. 5 through Sept. 7 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. Introductory remarks are to be given by James Carville and Mary Matalin followed by a joint conversation featuring President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush. Topics are to include national servicing standards, short sales versus principal reductions, REOs, appraisals and a Freddie Mac update.

The North Carolina Bankers Association will hold its American Mortgage Conference, Rebuilding Housing in America from Sept. 10 until Sept. 12 at the Marriott Crabtree Valley in Raleigh, N.C. Speakers include Federal Housing Finance Agency Acting Director Ed DeMarco, Ginnie Mae President Ted Tozer, FHA Assistant Director for Housing Charles Coulter, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Senior Counsel Richard Horn and executives from Bank of America Home Loans and Wells Fargo.

The second annual National Mortgage News Mortgage Regulatory Forum will be held on Sept. 13 and Sept. 14 at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel in Arlington, Va. Rep. Scott Garrett (R-N.J.) will give the opening keynote address and FDIC Acting Chairman Martin Gruenberg will give the second day's keynote address. Sessions include Managing the Foreclosure Process, Emerging Trends in Federal Fair Lending Enforcement, New Servicing Practices and a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau update.

The American Bankers Association will hold its ABA 2012 Marketing Conference from Sept. 23 until Sept. 25 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego. Session topics include The Impact of Technology on the Customer and Reinventing the Branch Model and Experience. Brett King, founder of the world’s first mobile, card-less bank, will discuss the latest trends that are redefining financial services.

American Conference Institute's 9th National Forum on Residential Mortgage Litigation and Regulatory Enforcement will be held on Sept. 27 and Sept. 28 at The Adolphus in Dallas. Speakers will include representatives from such federal and state regulatory offices as the CFPB, FTC, Conference of State Bank Supervisors, and the Illinois and Massachusetts attorneys general. Five judges will provide judicial perspectives and officials from Freddie Mac, Wells Fargo, Flagstar Bank, U.S. Bank, Deutsche Bank, Envoy Mortgage, American Home Mortgage Servicing, Illinois Bankers Association and MERSCORP will provide their insights.

Ellie Mae is holding its Encompass Experience 2012 National User Summit, an invitation-only event for current Encompass360 and DataTrac clients, on October 1-3 at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.

HousingWire is holding its REperform Summit from Oct. 3 to Oct. 5 at The Fairmont in Dallas. Principal reductions, servicer ratings, compliance updates and litigation trends are among the summit’s session topics.

The National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association
is holding its 2012 Annual Meetings & Expo, Reverse Mortgage Roundup from Oct. 15 through Oct. 17 at the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas. Speakers include Acting FHA Commissioner Carol Galante, HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary Charles Coulter, Former Senator Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) and Jared Bernstein, Senior Fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and former Chief Economic Adviser to Vice President Joseph Biden.

Former President Bill Clinton, as the keynote speaker, and former New York Mayor Rudi Giuliani will address the Mortgage Bankers Association's 99th Annual Convention and Expo, which is being held from Oct. 21 until Oct. 24 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago. The heads of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and Ginnie Mae -- Donald H. Layton, Timothy J. Mayopoulous and Theodore W. Tozer, respectively -- also will appear as will Acting Assistant Secretary for Housing Carol Galante. Sessions will cover buybacks, quality control, Basel III, CFPB guidance, regulatory changes, servicing standards, REO-to-rental, economic outlook and other topics.

The MBA's Independent Mortgage Bankers Conference will be held from Nov. 7 through Nov. 9 at the Fairmont Dallas Hotel in Dallas. Sessions will cover warehouse and correspondent lending, secondary market best practices, repurchases, loan office licensing, the increased regulatory environment and provide outlooks on the mortgage market and the private label market.

Current issues affecting the consumer bankruptcy profession will be discussed at the American Bankruptcy Institute's Eighth Annual Detroit Consumer Bankruptcy Conference on Nov. 12 at the MGM Grand Detroit. Faculty members include experienced local chapter 7 and chapter 13 consumer attorneys, bankruptcy judges and panel trustees from around Michigan. Maureen Donohue Kraus, the vice president of economic development and business attraction for the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, is the keynote speaker for the conference. Panel sessions include: Mortgage Modifications and Loss Mitigation, Hot Issues in Chapter 7 and 13, Introduction to Individual Chapter 11 Cases, The New Proof-of-Claim Rules and a Supreme Court and Lower Court Case Law Update.

The MBA's Accounting and Financial Management Conference 2012, Financial Strategies for a Rapidly Changing Regulatory Environment, will be held on Nov. 14, 15 and 16 at The Weston Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego. Sessions will include compensation, FASB and regulatory updates, audit and accounting preparations, performance and forecasting, risk management, and mergers and acquisition.

The Beard Group's 19th Annual Distressed Investing Conference, Maximizing Profits in the Distressed Debt Market, will be held at the Helmsley Park Lane Hotel in New York on Nov. 26.

NAMB, The Association of Mortgage Professionals, will hold its annual end-of-year conference and trade show from Dec. 7 through Dec. 10 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
