SunTrust Mortgage Inc. is paying consumers $500 if they use the Atlanta-based company to finance a home purchase or refinance an existing mortgage.
Loan applicants who qualify for a home loan with the lender will receive a $500 credit toward lender closing costs.
In addition to traditional refinances, the credit can be applied toward the closing costs on transactions closed through the Home Affordable Refinance Program -- the government supported program for borrowers who are underwater on their home equity.
The special offer is good until Sept. 30. Prospective borrowers can utilize SunTrust Bank branches and the SunTrust Mortgage Service Center.
SunTrust said it services new mortgage customers at retail banking locations in the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
It also closes loans for prospective borrowers in states that are adjacent to its banking network.
SunTrust Mortgage President Jerome Lienhard called home ownership "an important element of a family’s overall financial well-being" and said the offer enables consumers to benefit from a favorable mortgage environment as the housing market is improving.
