Calabasas, Calif.-based Countrywide Financial Corp. claims to be the largest mortgage lender and servicer in the United States.
In an announcement today, Countrywide said mortgage news publisher Inside Mortgage Finance "placed Countrywide #1 in mortgage lending and #1 in servicing" during the third quarter.
The mega-mortgage banker reported third quarter production of $92 billion and a servicing portfolio of $786 billion at quarter's end.
Countrywide said it has a 13.2% share of the U.S. market, and its companies funded about one in eight mortgages. Year-to-date October fundings were reported at $300 billion.
Its servicing portfolio includes just over one-tenth of all loans serviced in the country, according to the announcement, climbing past $800 million in October with 6 million loans being serviced.
