The number of people working in real estate finance continued to increase -- again reaching a new milestone.
During May, mortgage-related jobs totaled a record 504,800, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced today, up from a revised 503,000 the prior month. The sector has added about 30,000 positions since the same month last year.
The Bureau, a division of the Department of Labor, reports employment numbers around five weeks following the end of each month.
Among the mortgage bankers adding jobs recently are HSBC Mortgage Services, Mortgage Lenders Network USA Inc. and Citigroup.
"Real estate credit" accounted for 375,000 of May's jobs, the agency reported, while "Mortgage and nonmortgage loan brokers" accounted for the remaining 129,800.
The government said the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.0% in June, down from 5.1% during May.
