The number of mortgage jobs continued an unrelenting ascent -- climbing to another all-time high.
People working in mortgage-related positions totaled 521,900 during July, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the highest number on record. Jobs in the sector were a revised 517,100 the prior month, and the figure was a revised 477,500 in July 2004.
Nearly 389,000 of the jobs were in "Real estate credit," according to the bureau, part of the U.S. Department of Labor, while more than 133,000 were "Mortgage and nonmortgage loan brokers."
The sector detail is reported on a one month lag.
National unemployment -- which was unaffected by Hurricane Katrina in August -- edged down to 4.9%, the government said, reportedly a four year low.
