FL Mortgage License Apps Being Suspended

No more applications accepted after July 8

June 17, 2010

By staff

New license applications are being suspended for prospective mortgage originators in Florida.

That news came in a statement from Florida Office of Financial Regulation Commissioner Tom Cardwell.

According to the statement, the Office of Financial Regulation will stop accepting applications for certain mortgage license types on July 8. The move is being made because of changes in federal and state laws.

Then, on Oct. 1, Florida will start participating in the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System. All licensed mortgage brokers, mortgage brokerage firms and lenders will need to re-apply for licensing under the new requirements.

Cardwell warned that, even though the re-application period runs from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, loan officers must have a license by Oct. 1 to continue originating when the new application process starts. But current licensees can continue working while their licenses are being processed.

Re-applications could exceed 39,000 for mortgage brokers and reach as many as 7,000 for businesses and lenders, the statement said. The state expects that a bottleneck will cause the licensing process to take longer than the normal two-to-four months and possibly take as long as 12 months for poorly prepared applications.

"Although we will continue to process applications filed by July 8, we can't guarantee that applications will get processed before Oct. 1," Cardwell stated. "Applications which are filed immediately, are complete, correct and contain full disclosure have the best chance of being timely processed.

Next year, all licenses must be renewed each year by Dec 31.
