IndyMac Bank plans to get bigger and needs employees to help it grow.

The self-described 10th-largest originator announced it will boost staff by more than 280 workers who will fulfill underwriting, funding, sales and various support functions for its new regional mortgage centers in Florida, Illinois and Arizona.

“At a time when other mortgage companies are downsizing and closing operations centers, IndyMac is continuing to expand into additional regional markets,” and extending job opportunities, said Frank Sillman, chief executive of IndyMac’s Mortgage Bank, in a written statement.

The Pasadena, Calif.-based lender, which reported its first quarter production of $20 billion surpassed the prior record and was 72 percent higher than the level a year earlier, says it is committed to becoming the sixth largest U.S. mortgage lender by 2010.

By this fall, the full-service regional center in Schaumburg, Ill., will be about four times bigger than its current size of 10,000-plus square feet and allow the creation of 100 operations employees and 40 sales employees.

The same number of new hires and job positions will be accommodated in the full-service center in Tampa, Fla., IndyMac said.

IndyMac is also providing employment opportunities in Scottsdale, Ariz., where it expanded its correspondent and warehouse lending office to include wholesale mortgage lending. The lender didn’t respond by press time to MortgageDaily.com’s request for comment on how many Arizona jobs have been created.

While the Schaumburg and Tampa offices will serve their respective states, the Scottsdale center will serve Arizona, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Nevada.

With these three new facilities, IndyMac said it will operate a total of 15 regional mortgage centers nationwide and employ 3,300 mortgage professionals.
