IndyMac Bancorp Inc. recently expanded its staffing levels by hundreds and expects to continue doing so.

The Pasadena, Calif.-based thrift opened a new office in Boston that will employ 150 people once it is fully staffed, according to an e-mail statement from IndyMac spokeswoman Katie McFadzean.

A majority of the Boston employees will be new hires and will encompass underwriting, funding, sales, and various service and support roles, she said.

The announcement comes on the heels of milestone second quarter mortgage production of $20.1 billion and a record June 30 pipeline of $12.6 billion.

The new Boston facility brings to 16 the number of regional mortgage centers IndyMac operates, the spokeswoman said.

Two operations centers were opened during the second quarter 2006 in Chicago, Ill., and Tampa, Fla., according to McFadzean. Including an expansion in Scottsdale, Ariz., more than 250 new mortgage jobs were created.

A total of five new regional centers have been added during the past year, according to second quarter 2006 earnings data.

And further opportunities are on the horizon for job hunters, as “new sales offices and expansions are in planning stages” McFadzean said.

IndyMac employed 7,861 people, including 553 jobs offshore, at the end of the second quarter, according to its earnings filings.
