Online Ads at News Sites Grow

Advertising at U.S. newspaper Web sites continued double digit increases.

Second quarter advertising expenditures for newspaper Web sites was $796 million, according to data reported by the Newspaper Association of America. Online ads were up nearly 20 percent from a year earlier.

"The increase reflects the thirteenth consecutive quarter of double digit growth for online newspaper advertising since NAA started reporting online ad spending in 2004," the Arlington, Va.-based group said.

Web ad revenue accounted for 7 percent of $11.3 billion in total revenues, climbing from 5.4 percent during the second quarter 2006, the statement indicated. At the same time, total ad revenues were down nearly 9 percent.

"Advertisers know that newspaper Web sites are ideal for reaching online users with the most attractive demographics," NAA President and Chief Executive Officer John F. Sturm said in the press release.

Biggest Web Sites

While was visited by more users than any other Web site during the latest month, more people traveled to sites operated by Microsoft's than any other company.

Those were the findings of the August 2007 NielsenNetRatings Top 10 Web Sites.

By brand, Google topped the list with a unique audience of 111,165, according to the ranking. No. 2 was Yahoo, followed by No. 3 Microsoft, No. 4 MSN/Windows Live and No. 5 AOL Media Network.

But when ranked by parent company, Nielsen found Microsoft held the No. 1 spot with a unique audience of 118,058 during August. Google was second, then Yahoo, Time Warner and News Corp. Online.

Looking at Web site activity by the amount of time spent, AOL Media Network was tops at more than four hours monthly per user, the data indicated. Yahoo trailed with more than three hours per user, followed by Fox Interactive Media with about two-and-a-half hours.

Nielsen noted the biggest Web advertiser during August was Low Rate Source -- which spent an estimated $51.7 million for 25 million impressions. Next was NexTag Inc., with an estimated $49.6 million spent, then Experian Group LTD, which had an estimated $40.9 million in online ad expenditures. LendingTree parent InterActiveCorp. was the No. 4 biggest spender, at $35.5 million, and Countrywide was No. 5, with $35.4 million.
