The national ranks of loan originators grew by more than 10,000 on a quarterly basis. The growth was evenly distributed among bank and non-bank loan officers, though non-bank originators grabbed a bigger share of the total.

As of Sept. 30, there were 505,460 mortgage loan originators registered with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System.

Registrations expanded from three months earlier, when active originators numbered 494,271.

The third-quarter total included 115,826 state-licensed or state-registered individuals who maintained a total of 243,840 licenses — including some maintained by the same originators in multiple states.

Unique state registrations increased from 110,710 as of the end of June and 113,352 as of Sept. 30, 2011.

At 35,881, California had more originator state registrations than any other state. Florida followed with 14,404, then Texas at 13,991.

With only 623 registrations, Alaska had the fewest state registrations.

Four originator licenses were revoked in Illinois, two were revoked in Utah, and several other states each revoked one.

Kentucky suspended 27 originator licenses.

Three California companies’ licenses were revoked, while Florida, Utah and Washington each revoked the license of one company.

As of the close of the third quarter, there were 16,397 companies that maintained 33,129 licenses, more than the 16,126 unique entities carrying 32,342 licenses at the end of the second quarter. At the same point last year, 16,776 companies maintained 32,473 licenses.

Branch registrations climbed to 18,449 unique branches with 31,348 licenses as of the end of September, more than the 17,947 branch registration with 29,704 licenses in place at the end of June. As of the same date last year, 18,466 branches were registered.

The total originator figure also reflected 394,470 loan officers registered in the NMLS federal registry. That was more than the 387,618 originators who were registered through the federal registry as of June 30.

Bank originators accounted for 77 percent of total originators in the latest quarter, off from 78 percent in the second quarter.

The Sept. 30 federal registry total included 229,860 originators working for entities under the supervision of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, 73,627 originators at banks regulated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and 42,821 whose employers were regulated by the Federal Reserve Board. Another 1,487 worked at institutions regulated by the Farm Credit Administration, and 46,675 worked at credit unions regulated by the National Credit Union Administration.

California also reigned when it came to federal originator registrations at 41,348. In Texas, 27,415 bank originators were registered. Florida’s count was 22,699, while 23,868 were registered in New York and Ohio’s total was 19,474.

With just 615 bank originators registered, Alaska had the fewest.

NMLS reported that 10,907 financial institutions were registered through the federal registry as of the most-recent date, more than the 10,756 registered three months prior.

Total mortgage loan originator registrations were adjusted down by 4,836 during the latest period to account for originators who were registered in both the state and federal registries. There were 121 companies with dual registrations.
