Bankruptcy case volume was up more than a quarter in a single month and has deteriorated for three consecutive months.
Last month, there were 91,234 new cases filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Courts across the country. Filings leapt from an upwardly revised 72,207 in February.
But bankruptcy activity, including commercial and consumer, has subsided from the same month a year earlier, when 102,696 new case filings were made.
The statistics were reported Thursday by the American Bankruptcy Institute based on data provided by Epiq Systems Inc.
The non-commercial portion of March’s bankruptcy filings was 87,915.
Consumer bankruptcies grew from 69,386 in February. The February total was originally reported at 69,380.
Filings have increased each month since December 2013, when a revised 63,618 bankruptcies were filed.
Non-commercial filings were fewer than in March 2013, when 98,569 new bankruptcies were filed. ABI originally reported the year earlier number at 98,553.
During the first three months of 2014, non-commercial bankruptcy filings amounted to 222,599.
