A television advertisement being run by a group that has the support of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) seeks to stop the Trump administration from gutting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
President Donald J. Trump last month appointed Mick Mulvaney to serve as acting director of the CFPB despite the outgoing director’s attempt to put his own person in charge.
Democrats protested Trump’s move,
claiming that the president was violating the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act with his appointment.
Last week, the Progressive Change Institute organized a protest outside the bureau that included Warren, who was the architect of the CFPB. In addition, the group held a press conference call with prominent Democrats — including former Sen. Christopher Dodd, former Rep. Barney Frank and Rep. Maxine Waters — to discuss plans to fight Trump’s appointment.
Now the institute
is running an ad on Washington, D.C., television stations. The ad is running on CNBC, Fox and MSNBC.
The ad features a woman who says she was harassed by banks following the death of her daughter. The banks reportedly said she was responsible for her daughter’s debts. The woman said that once she contacted the CFPB, the harassment stopped.
“This isn’t about politics, this is about whether you’re on our side or Wall Street’s side,” the woman says.
Progressive Change Institute Co-Founder Adam Green explained in a written statement that the ad is intended to put a human face on the on the CFPB.
“We will not allow Wall Street, Mick Mulvaney and Donald Trump to sabotage the consumer bureau from within like we’ve seen attempted at the EPA with Scott Pruitt and the Department of Education with Betsy DeVos,” Green stated.
