Mortgage Gatherings Pinpoint New Rules

Upcoming mortgage related events

April 2, 2015

By AIMEE L. BROWN Mortgage Daily

With recent regulatory policies and implementation deadlines taking hold, several industry conferences and workshops are geared towards helping lenders manage a successful business in the age of compliance. Appraisals, banking and reverse mortgages are among other topics being covered at upcoming events.

The 2015 Housing Policy and Hispanic Lending Conference, hosted by the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, will wrap up on April 1.

The annual conference, which convened on March 30 and is closed for registration, rounded up real estate and lending leaders to focus on topics related to homeownership by Latinos. As well, the association said it would release its fifth annual State of Homeownership Report and Hispanic Wealth Project Blueprint during the conference.

Currently, the Hispanic trade group also is accepting nominations for its first annual Top 250 Latino Mortgage Originators Award. Originators who make the list will be honored at the 2015 NAHREP National Convention & Latin Music Festival at the downtown Hilton hotel in Chicago. The event will run from Sept. 20 to Sept. 22 and focus on housing industry topics and the Latino market. While registration and conference details have not been released yet, interested parties can opt into the pre-registration list to ensure they receive this information when it goes public.

On April 1, the Mortgage Bankers Association Single-Family Rental Finance Summit 2015 will convene in Arlington, Virginia, at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel. Depending on MBA membership status, fees for the one-day summit range from $495 to $750. Sessions will cover future business opportunities in store for single-family rental properties, and slated speakers include industry professionals with specialized insight on this unique market.

In a couple weeks, the Capital Hilton in the District of Columbia will host the MBA's National Advocacy Conference 2015. On April 14 and April 15, participants will learn about current issues affecting the mortgage banking business, receive pointers on discussions topics to address with legislators and other governing bodies and have the opportunity to visit Capitol Hill with their peers. The two-day event price tag is $350 for MBA members. Everyone else will be charged $1,000.

Directors over national community banks or federal savings associations have the opportunity to attend two Office of the Comptroller of the Currency workshops at the Louisville Marriott East hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. The May 5 workshop titled Risk Governance will help directors understand how to be effective at risk measurement and management. The May 6 Compliance Risk workshop will outline crucial components for a program involving compliance risk management. Each $99 class is capped at 35 registrants and includes all pre-workshop study material, course documents and other relevant workshop guides.

The Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach in Huntington Beach, California, will house the 2015 Western Regional Meeting for the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association. The three-day meeting, which starts May 11, will include issues related to home equity conversion mortgages. An optional financial assessment workshop is slated for the afternoon on the first day of the conference. Depending on registration date, membership status and workshop option, conference fees range from $545 to $995.

The 140-year-old American Bankers Association will hold its ABA Regulatory Compliance Conference from June 14 through June 17 at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in the District of Columbia. According to the ABA's conference notification, the conference is "designed by bankers for bankers" and will include several panels that address current regulations and how they affect the banking industry. Compliance professionals and senior regulators will lead discussion panels, which include the impending deadline on the CFPB's integrated disclosures rule, balancing privacy matters with potential security threats and managing consumer complaints. The four-day conferences will cost ABA members $1,390 while non-members will be charged $1,790.

The ABA also will offer a pre-conference workshop on June 13 that covers fair lending topics. Located in the same venue as the main conference, the Evolving Your Fair Lending Program to Meet New Expectations seminar will offer experienced industry pros an updated and detailed look at regulating agency expectations for compliance, risk assessment adjustments that banks should consider and building a strong banking program that incorporates and follows current fair lending practices. The all-day, optional workshop runs $475 for ABA members and $675 for non-members and includes a buffet lunch and separate dessert break.

Real estate appraisers and related professionals who need to stay current on appraisal industry matters can head to the Sheraton Dallas Hotel in Dallas on July 27 for the Appraisal Institute's annual meeting known as AI Connect. Depending on membership status and registration date, fees for the three-day event range from $730 to $850. Besides opportunities for continuing education credit at more than 50 educational breakout sessions, the institute's meeting announcement promises participants ample networking opportunities and an exhibition hall that will showcase the latest in valuation services and products.

Less than two weeks after the National Association of Mortgage Professionals held its inaugural 2015 NAMB Wholesale Summit in Orlando, Florida, the group's March 23 media statement said this summit would not disappear. In fact, the trade group revealed it planned to continue on the work the summit started by inviting participants together every quarter.

"We wanted to open an extended conversation of common goals and concerns and that's exactly what happened," NAMB President John Councilman said in a written statement. "We set out to host a conversation about the kinds of meaningful changes that are very difficult if not impossible to have in most originator-to-lender dialogue. We accomplished that. Now, we have to continue with this dialogue."

At present, the next wholesale meeting is scheduled in concurrence for the NAMB National at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas. Slated from Oct. 17 through Oct. 19, the event's website touts it as "the largest gathering of mortgage professionals in the nation" and at $345, is considerably less expensive than comparable conference offerings.
