Bank of America Corp.’s head of consumer lending, a former Countrywide Financial Corp. executive who has been based in New York, is relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina, the lender said.

From the bank’s Charlotte headquarters, Steve Boland will continue to be in charge of auto, home and other types of consumer lending in the company’s consumer banking and wealth management units.

He will also continue to report to Boston-based Dean Athanasia, who reports directly to Chief Executive Officer Brian Moynihan.

Boland’s unit employs roughly 10,000 nationwide, including in Charlotte, where the bank has mortgage call centers.

Boland, 46, joined BofA through its 2008 acquisition of subprime-mortgage lender Countrywide, a purchase that has produced huge losses for the bank from soured loans and legal settlements. At Countrywide, his roles included president of its LandSafe Appraisal business.

Last year, Bank of America named Boland to a newly created position that combined the mortgage-processing business he was already running with mortgage sales. Earlier this year, his role was expanded to include oversight of all consumer lending.

Boland has been based in New York for the past five years. He entered the banking industry in 1990, when he went to work in Florida for Bank of America predecessor North Carolina National Bank.
