GMAC Sub: Avoid Brokers

GMAC Sub: Avoid TV commercial says “deal direct”

May 24, 2005

In a television commercial aired on CNN today, advises subprime homeowners, “Don’t end up paying unreasonable points and fees to a broker.” has become known for knocking bankers — with TV commercials featuring a now-familiar clumsy banker who can’t even convince his own mother to get a mortgage from his bank.

The Costa Mesa, Calif.-based lender’s anti-broker commercial was far less comical than the anti-banker ad, with a serious, professional-sounding woman speaking. sister companies, Homecomings Financial and GMAC Residential Funding, originate loans from mortgage brokers and bankers.

General Motors, which saw its bonds downgraded to junk status recently by Standard & Poor’s, earlier this month announced that parent, GMAC Mortgage, was capitalized and restructured under the name Residential Capital Corp. GM made the move in an apparent attempt to distance the mortgage operations — and the associated cost of funds — from the dismal earnings expected for GM.

The woman continues in her dialogue about avoiding brokers — noting borrowers could “deal direct, and save thousands by calling or logging on to”

“ditech will also guaranty you the lowest rate and fees,” the commercial went on.
