Industry news publication releases reader data for first month

IRVING, TX (October 2, 2002) — MortgageDaily.com, a premier online mortgage industry news publication, released demographic data Wednesday about readers that have registered so far for its new user password system. To access news articles, readers are now required to opt in for e-mail news alerts and provide basic information about their position and the type of lending they are associated with.

The first user registered on August 28th, 2002, and this announcement includes information about users that registered through September 27th.

As expected, the majority of readers are in loan origination, which was defined as: “Includes loan officers, loan originators, loan reps, loan sales, mortgage brokers and anyone else that earns commissions for originating and closing mortgage loans.” Specifically, 60% of registered users said they are in “Loan Origination.”

“While we have always speculated that most of our readers were loan originators, the new data provide concrete, detailed evidence,” said Sam Garcia, Publisher. “What’s surprising is that 40% of our readers say they are in other areas of mortgage lending.”

“Loan Production” was the next most selected occupation, with 7% of readers selecting this category. “Loan Production” includes all positions involved in the loan production process from origination to closing, except loan originators. Examples include loan processors, sales managers, underwriters and closers.

Next was “Wholesale Lending,” which includes all positions at a wholesale lender except those in loan production, with 6%. Examples include account executives and their sales managers, and quality control personnel.

“Mortgage Loan Executives,” which includes vice presidents (or higher) at national lenders with more than 100 employees, was picked by approximately 4% of the registrants.

Other notable job categories, each representing less than five percent of registered users, included:

In addition to occupation, readers were asked to pick among “residential,” “subprime” and “commercial.”

Approximately 84% of the registrants chose “residential,” while 11% picked “subprime and 5% selected “commercial.”“Many readers indicated they work at a company where they would likely have a personal e-mail address with the company’s domain name in it,” Mr. Garcia said. “For example, JohnDoe@MortgageCompanyXYZ.com. However, a good portion of this group chose to instead provide personal e-mail addresses from accounts with services like AOL.com, Yahoo.com and Mindspring.com. We speculate that this suggested readers wanted their membership to carry on beyond their tenure with current or future employers.”
