The wife of the Mortgage Bankers Association’s chief is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate.

Dr. Lise Van Susteren, a forensic psychiatrist from Bethesda, Md., announced Thursday her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Paul Sarbanes of Maryland.

The medical doctor opened her campaign with events in Baltimore and Bethesda.

The Senate candidate’s agenda will call for changes in the health care and public school systems, and will challenge the Bush administration on its conduct of the war in Iraq.

Van Susteren is married to Jonathan L. Kempner, president and CEO of MBA, and is the sister of legal news commentator Greta Van Susteren.
