After declining in the first quarter, the number of registered mortgage loan originators increased during the latest quarter.

At the end of the second quarter, there 516,707 mortgage loan originators registered with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System.

Total registrations expanded from the end of the first quarter, when NMLS originator registrations fell 2 percent from the prior period to 504,772.

Previous data released by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors indicate that the latest number exceeded the 494,271 registrations as of the second-quarter 2012.

The most recent total was adjusted to reflect 3,783 individuals who maintained both state and federal NMLS registrations.

State-licensed originators numbered 119,571 with 281,337 licenses as of June 30. State-licensed ranks increased from 112,970 at the end of March and 110,710 at the same point last year.

More originators were licensed in California than in any other state: 38,129. With just 845 registered originators, Alaska had the fewest.

In Kentucky, 23 licenses were suspended in the second quarter, the most of any state.

Fifty-four revoked licenses in Georgia was the highest number of any state.

The NMLS Federal Registry had 400,919 registered originators, rising from 394,775 reported for the prior quarter and 387,618 in the same quarter during 2012.

The June 30, 2013, Federal Registry included 76,090 originators who work for companies regulated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., 43,154 who are employed by Federal Reserve Board-regulated entities and 231,203 whose employers are regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

In addition, 48,875 worked at credit unions regulated by the National Credit Union Administration, and 1,597 had employers that are regulated by the Farm Credit Administration.

The June 30 total for company registrations was 26,357, more than the 26,292 that were registered three months prior but fewer than the 26,763 total 12 months prior.

Company registrations were reduced by 103 to reflect entities that maintained both a state registration and a federal registration.

The number of state-licensed companies declined to 15,791 from 15,842 as of March 31. A year earlier, the total was 16,126. The latest batch of registered companies maintained 33,637 licenses.

The California Department of Business Oversight revoked 12 company licenses, while Virginia revoked three and Washington revoked one. No other states had company revocations.

In addition, 19,546 branches of companies were state-registered with 36,683 licenses as of the second quarter. Branch registrations were up from 19,046 in the first quarter and 17,947 in the second-quarter 2012.

Financial institutions included in the Federal Registry increased to 10,669 from 10,551 three months earlier but fell from 10,756 one year prior.

Texas’ 834 federally registered entities topped all other states, followed by Illinois’ 744 and Minnesota’s 513. Alaska’s 27 registered financial institutions were the fewest.
