While consumer and business bankruptcies have retreated from a year ago, filing activity deteriorated from the previous month.

A total of 77,469 commercial and non-commercial bankruptcies were filed last month, climbing from the upwardly revised 73,835 filings made in June.

But U.S. bankruptcy courts weren’t as busy as they were in July 2013, when filings totaled 87,746. The year-earlier number was originally reported at 87,684.

The 13,000-member American Bankruptcy Institute reported the data on Tuesday.

July’s per-capita rate was 3.07 filings per 1,000 in population.

By state, there was no change from June in the top five: Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Utah and Illinois.

Consumer bankruptcy filings accounted for 74,595 of July 2014’s filings.

Noncommercial activity jumped from 71,004 a month earlier. ABI originally reported June’s consumer volume at 71,003.

Consumer bankruptcies numbered 84,114 in July 2013. The year-earlier total was originally reported at 84,103.

During the seven months ended July 31, non-commercial bankruptcies amounted to 535,427 filings.
