Compared to a year ago, the number of financial institution mortgage lenders and their loan originators has declined, while non-bank lenders and originators have increased.

As of the first quarter, there were 512,045 mortgage loan originators who were registered in the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System.

The number of registrations declined compared to the final quarter of last year, when 524,734 originators were registered.

But registrations, which typically increase each quarter of the year then fall in the first quarter as some originators don’t renew, have grown from 506,985 as of the first-quarter 2014.

The details from the most-recent period were covered in the NMLS Mortgage Industry Report 2015 Q1 Update from the
Conference of State Bank Supervisors.

First-quarter 2015 registrations included 118,940 state-licensed originators with 323,658 licenses.

Non-bank originator count dropped from 131,725 three months earlier and 117,674 a year earlier.

In Oklahoma, annual registrations were up 24 percent — the most of any state.

Also included in total registrations were 396,446 originators who worked at financial institutions.

Bank originators numbered 398,716 as of the fourth-quarter 2014
and 392,896 in the same quarter in 2014.

As of the first quarter of this year, 82,739 mortgage loan originators were employed at banks supervised by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. The Federal Reserve Board supervised financial institutions with 45,020 originators, and 215,756 originators were employed by banks regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the currency.

In addition, 1,732 originators worked for banks supervised
by the Farm Credit Administration, and 53,298 were employed at credit unions regulated by the National Credit Union Administration.

A total of 3,341 originators maintained both state licenses and federal registrations. This was deducted from the sum of the two registration types to come up with the total.

As of the most-recent date, 25,285 employers were NMLS-registered, fewer than the 26,486 counted at the end of last year and also off from 25,486 at the same point last year.

State-licensed entities made up 15,279 of the first-quarter 2015 total, tumbling from 16,022 in the fourth quarter but minimally higher than 15,246 as of the first quarter of last year. The most-current company registrants had 35,656 licenses.

Delaware saw the numbers of state-licensed companies climb 21 percent on an annual basis, the biggest percentage gain.
A five percent drop in New York was the largest decline.

In addition, there were 20,090 state-licensed branches as of the latest quarter with 43,815 licenses.

There were also 10,099 financial institutions registered, down from the previous quarter’s 10,566 and the year-earlier period’s 10,336.

Ninety-three companies carried both state licenses and federal registrations in the first-quarter 2015. Overall company
count was reduced to reflect this.
