The top originator at JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s mortgage unit generated nearly $200 million in loans last year.
David Jaffe was the top-producing mortgage originator during 2007, Chase spokesman Tom Kelly told MortgageDaily.com. With 445 loans for $171 million, Jaffe was No. 1 in first mortgage production, Kelly said. He was also the No. 1 home-equity originator, with $29 million in volume. Jaffe operates from Thousand Oaks, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles. “David takes the time to understand home buyers’ needs and then matches them to the right mortgage,” Kelly stated. “Home buyers and real estate agents know that David and Chase will deliver what they promise.” In just the Southeast region of the country, Penny Hill was the biggest producer. Her 2007 fundings amounted to 366 loans for $156 million. Hill, a Ph.D., had held the No. 1 spot nationally for five years when MortgageDaily.com interviewed her in 2006. “You have to have that comfort level, talk their language, a lot of people are intimidated,” Hill said at the time from her base in Sarasota, Fla. “The fun part is individualizing the program and the concept (for each client); I ask a lot of questions and listen very carefully — the client tells me what they need, if I ask enough questions.” Chase originates residential loans from 290 mortgage offices and 3,100 bank branches, Kelly indicated. The New York-based company employs 2,400 loan officers nationally.
