|The first month in 2009 saw an increase in bankruptcy filings.
During January, 88,773 consumer bankruptcies were filed, the American Bankruptcy Institute reported today. The findings were based on data reported by the National Bankruptcy Research Center.
Filings climbed from 84,926 in December, according to the data. In January 2008, 66,050 bankruptcies were filed.
Chapter 13 filings represented one-third of bankruptcy filings in January.
The institute forecasts more than 1.4 million bankruptcies this year, up from 1.1 million during 2008.
The Alexandria, Va.-based group said it has more than 11,700 members. Among its ranks are attorneys, lenders and judges.
