In line with the overall job market, mortgage employment contracted again.

During September, 259,300 people working in the mortgage industry. The figure was based on data reported today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The home loan workforce fell for the second consecutive month from a revised 262,200 in August. A year ago, the industry employed a revised 301,700 people.

The mortgage employment sector included 192,400 people in “real estate credit,” down from 194,200 in August. “Mortgage and nonmortgage loan brokers” accounted for 66,900, off from 68,000.

The results were in line with overall U.S. employment, which declined by 190,000 jobs in October, according to the bureau — a division of the U.S. Department of Labor. U.S. unemployment, meanwhile, rose to 10.2 percent from September’s 9.8 percent.
