The number of active loan modifications that were processed for the Home Affordable Modification Program saw a bigger gain in January than a month earlier and a year earlier.
As of Jan. 31, there were 856,154 active HAMP loan modifications in place, according to data released Friday by the Obama administration.
That was an increase of 5,019 active permanent loan modifications over the HAMP modifications that were in place the previous month.
In December, the number of active modifications increased 4,665, while the rise was 5,934 in January 2012.
A total of 1,264,711 first lien modifications have started through HAMP since its inception, while 105,437 second-lien HAMPs have been initiated.
As of the end of January, 918,324 trial and permanent HAMP modifications were active.
January’s biggest gain in active permanent modifications came from JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., where active modifications climbed 1,450 from December to 143,378.
Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., was next with a gain of 1,073, followed by Ocwen Loan Servicing LLC’s 760 increase, Homeward Residential Inc.’s 196 and Bank of America, N.A.’s, 82.
Both Select Portfolio Servicing and GMAC Mortgage LLC moved backwards and saw a decline in the number of total active modifications.
During the fourth-quarter 2012, members of the Mortgage Insurance Companies of America — including Genworth Mortgage Insurance Corp., Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corp. and Radian Guaranty Inc. — helped complete 5,791 HAMP modifications for $1.1 billion, according to an announcement from the trade group.
