Fewer consumers resorted to bankruptcy last month, with monthly filings falling to their lowest level in six months.
Businesses and consumers filed a total of 67,712 new bankruptcies in the month of August, fewer than the upwardly revised 71,854 the previous month.
New filings were also lower than during the same month last year, when U.S. Bankruptcy Courts were hit with an upwardly revised 75,234 filings.
The American Bankruptcy Institute released the data on Wednesday.
ABI said that the U.S. per-capita rate was 2.71 filings per thousand in population.
Tennessee had the highest per-capita rate: 5.76.
Next was 5.35 in Alabama, then 5.09 in Georgia,
4.46 in Illinois and 4.40 in Utah.
Consumer bankruptcy filings accounted for 65,248 of the most-recent total.
Non-commercial filings were at there lowest level since February, when the total was 62,748.
Consumer filings were an upwardly revised 69,202 in July and an upwardly revised 72,503
in August 2014.
During the eight months ended Aug. 31, 2015, consumer bankruptcies amounted to 542,145.
