In addition to falling from a month earlier and a year earlier, the number of consumer bankruptcy filings has retreated for three consecutive months.
Total bankruptcy filings during November, including commercial and non-commercial filings, came to 59,300, falling from 63,055 the prior month.
In addition to the month-over-month improvement, new bankruptcy filings were down on a year-over-year basis, off from 65,562 a year previous.
The statistics were reported by the Alexandria, Virginia-based American Bankruptcy Institute.
There were 2.51 total filings per thousand in U.S. population last month,
lower than 2.70 in October.
The November per-capita rate was highest in Tennessee: 5.65. After that was Alabama’s 5.52, then Georgia’s 4.76, Utah’s 4.15 and Illinois’ 4.14.
Consumer bankruptcies accounted for 56,392 of November 2016 filings.
Non-commercial filings fell from 60,015 a month earlier and have receded each month since August, when there were 65,296 filings.
In November 2015, consumer filings came to 63,251.
