The highest court in the land has granted two banks’ request to challenge lawsuits alleging discrimination filed by Miami.
Back in late 2013, the city filed federal lawsuits against
Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co.
The banks are accused by Miami of targeting minorities with predatory home loans in violation of the Fair Housing Act.
All three cases were dismissed by
U.S. District Judge William P. Dimitrouleas.
Miami then filed an appeal with
the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.
In September 2015, the appeals court ruled in Miami’s favor and reversed the dismissals.
The BofA and Wells Fargo cases were consolidated, and a writ of certiorari — which is a request for the case to be heard by the Supreme Court — was filed in April of this year.
Amicus briefs were
filed in support of the Supreme Court hearing the banks’ appeal by the American Bankers Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
On Tuesday,
a notice from the Supreme Court indicated that it has agreed to hear the case in its next term, which begins in October.
